Inhumanity inspiration #5 – Waterworld

Ok so I was really young when I saw this and I almost guarantee that if I saw it today I would change my opinion on it. But I loved it. No joke. It grabbed me even before the actual film started. The globe appeared and the Gold framed letters spelling out "UNIVERSAL" swirled around it but then all of a sudden the landmasses that made up the continents were sinking and the oceans swallowed them up. This was referencing the films title in a clever way that resonated with me.

In preparing to write Inhumanity, I had to do a lot of research on the effects of global warning. The perma-smog that covers the sky serves two purposes within the narrative; 1) to try and let people know the consequences of air pollution, and 2) a narrative ploy that means I don't have to deal with the effects of the sun. Including that would have altered several aspects of the novel. But what I found more fascinating were the acid rains which play a prominent role at certain parts of the novel.

Most of the film itself has been lost in the sands of time, but it does lay claim to being the first ever eco-disaster based post-apocalyptic tale. And now nearly twenty years later I'm writing about it as an inspiration says something for it's impression on me.
