Inhumanity inspiration #4 - Split Second

Let me say right off the bat that this film is trash. Not even the good kind of trash. When I discovered it by chance, it seemed to tick all the boxes:

• Rutger Hauer

• Weird monster

• Not set in New York

• Interesting concept

Sadly it didn't tick the "good story", "decent pacing" or "interesting action" boxes.

BUT! Yes, there is hope for this film, and that is in its setting. A strangely beautiful, dark, wet nightmare. Seeing Detective Harley Stone stalk through the streets of London on the hunt for a serial killer that synchronizes with the lunar cycle was great. The idea of a bustling post-apocalyptic world with the majority of the population intact was a rarity.

It's dark and brooding setting was (for me anyway) the only reason I saw this film through to its conclusion. While I keep saying that the other items on this list are "must-reads" or "must-see", this is definitely not one of them. In fact, I'd go as far as to say it is a "must-avoid".

However, this is a fine example of why we can learn from bad works of art. Some people only strive to read great books and see great films, you know, the types that win awards and appear on "best of" lists. But a lot can be said about terrible films and books, you learn what NOT to do. And

Split Second taught me a little bit about that.

It's funny where inspiration can come from!
